Jensen Ackles speaking about acting

“My father is an actor, so he brought me into his agency when I was young. It wasn’t something I wanted to do until high school, when I started taking theater and really liked it. Then an agent found me and wanted me to come out to Los Angeles and give it a shot. I gave myself six months, but it only took me like a week to get a job.”

“What I enjoy most is travelling to different places and meeting new people. For me, it’s all about life experiences, and I’m very grateful that acting allows me so many interesting and fulfilling ones.”

“When we started, we knew the show was going to be hit or miss, and we needed to find a core audience to really make us survive. And I think we’ve been able to do that.”

“Comedy, drama, Westerns, sci-fi… it’s all fine if the story’s compelling and the character is interesting to me. I do like action a lot.”

Winchesters Gone Wild

Jensen Ackles got his cowboy on when Supernatural transported Dean and Sam to the Old West for an upcoming episode.

“The guys find a formula to battle Eve, the mother of all monsters, but the problem is the only record of this formula ever existing happened over a 100 years ago,” Ackles previews.

“So they call upon their angel friends to give them a time-travel experience.” The excursion fit like a glove, says Ackles, who like Dean is wild about Westerns. “I sent a picture to my father [from this episode], and he wrote back, ‘You’ve been rehearsing this scene since you were six.'”
Hopefully he rehearsed it well, because Supernatural pulled out all the stops. “I get to have, like, a high noon shootout, we get to see a hanging…,” says Ackles. “We packed a lot into a 42-minute episode. It’s really good.”

Their ‘Supernatural’ ways

Is it weird or kind cool watching yourself getting shot or stabbed on screen?
JARED: “It is, it is, but it’s almost like really cool to watch on screen and kind of really just exhausting to do in life. It’s like a sex scene or something. It’s like, ‘Okay, well we can kind of see your breast so kind of lean to the right a little. Okay, yes, okay. Now your neck.’ It’s just so calculated it’s almost like, ‘Okay, well if you stab like this, then we’re not going to see the light shining off the blade, so make sure you stab like that.’ And you’re like, ‘Oh,’ and you realize like man, it really takes a lot. It’s not just like, ‘All right, go in and stab, and then go like wow!’ So, you know, and the hand coming down and it has to look dead. ‘Oh the hand flexed a little bit, we could tell you were, so like really keep the hand…’ You don’t think about that. It’s a very painstaking process to kill somebody on screen. And especially for a horror series. Filming death takes a long time.”

How do you feel about it, Jensen?
JENSEN: “I agree. The best looking special effects that you see us doing probably took forever to get right. From the make-up, wardrobe, lighting, camera – everything has to be perfect and it has to run perfect all at the same time. Sometimes a demon has to throw you a certain way, so you have to rehearse that scene until the stunt coordinator feels you’ve got it right. And most of the time you don’t. (laughs) So, it’s a double-edged sword, the stunts can look really cool when they are done, but ten hours after you started them, I guarantee you are usually really sticky, sweaty and just want to deck the first demon we see.” (laughs)

About acting and his past

“The drama teacher had asked me to be a part of the annual play. I thought: ‘This is my last year. I’ve been doing baseball for three years.’

“I went to my coach. I thought he was going to rip my head off. Surprisingly, he said, ‘Good for you. You’re only in high school once’.”

Singing in West Side Story in front of his confused peers on opening night was nerve-racking.

About doing Red Hood Voice

The other newcomer to animation acting is Jensen Ackles, who voices the villain of the piece, the Red Hood. Ackles, of course, is best known for his portrayal of Dean Winchester on the CW series, Supernatural.

“There really wasn’t any heavy acting choices to make,” says Ackles regarding Red Hood. “It pretty much just bounced off the page, and I just tried to do it justice. With working in this medium, once you get clear on all the specific pronunciations and how the tone of the voice needs to rise and fall, it was really about focusing on the more emotional elements of the script, especially in the intense moments and trying to envision the scene with the characters. And envisioning yourself in that scenario. A lot of times if you can do that, if you can put yourself there, I think the voice follows suit.”

Between his work on Supernatural and now the world of Batman, Ackles obviously has had some experience working in what has affectionately been called the “fan boy genre.”

“The positives of working in this genre are that the fans are extremely devoted,” he offers. “People really invest themselves in these stories and characters, and the mythology behind them. To be a part of something that so many people really get behind and want more of is extremely gratifying.”

Haunted Hunk

Actor Jensen Ackles shares his spooky experiences of playing a spirit-slaying Supernatural brother

Supernatural’s one of the spookiest shows on TV, with a fresh demon or murderous monster appearing each week, but after a lifetime of watching Horror films star Jensen Ackles thought he was immune to being spooked. That was until the show filmed an episode in a disused asylum…

“That episode, Asylum, was actually filmed in an abandoned mental institute and it was so spooky the art department didn’t have to do anything to it,” he says, “It was a huge five-storer building, completely deserted and not used. We were filming on the third floor and when they called ‘lunch’ the whole crew started walking towards the stairwell, so I took a shortcut down the back stairs. So I went down it was just completely dark, and there was this long, long hallway with little light at the end of it, it was really freaky. I walked a little faster, and then I was running past all these rooms. So that was a little freaky. It made all the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.”

Jensen Ackles and Ty Vaughn

Jensen Ackles: plays Eric on Days of Our Lives
His buddy: Ty Vaughn
Friends since: seventh grade, when Ty moved to Jensen’s school in Dallas; they now live together in Los Angeles

How did you meet?
Jensen: We were in study hall and weren’t supposed to talk. I was making jokes and Ty just chimed in and made me laugh and from then on…
Ty: …he kinda took me under his wing.

How is a guy friendship unique?
Jensen: I think feelings are more understood between guys. You don’t have to talk, you just know; girls want to open up more.

What makes you friends?
Jensen: Humor is a real big thing with us.
Ty: Major sarcasm!

What do you do for fun?
Ty: We sit on the couch and play Nintendo. That’s about it! [Laughs.] We’re pretty competitive, though.
Jensen: We also go to the basketball court down the street. We both love sports.

If you had a problem, would you talk about it or breeze over it and go play basketball?
Ty: Well if there’s a death in the family or something, you’ve definitely got to console your best friend.

Who’s that babe?

Jensen Ackles

Age: 19, Pisces

Status: Single

Hometown: Richardson, Texas (a suburb of Dallas)

How you know him: This soap stud has been streaming up the screen as good guy Eric on Days of Our Lives. But you might remember him from the short-lived series Mr. Rhodes or his guest roles on Sweet Valley High and Cybill.

Breakin’ into the Biz: “I had done a couple of regional commercials and some catalog modelling in Texas when I was younger. But it really wasn’t until I went with a friend to an open call that I was ‘discovered'”. Isn’t that friend majorly bummed? “No, he’s not mad – in fact, he’s one of my roommates in LA.”

All the right career moves: “Acting wasn’t really something I knew I wanted to do – Days of Our Lives was the turning point. I don’t want to be huge like Tom Cruise. I’d rather have a career like Chris O’Donnell. He gets good parts, but he can still walk around like a normal guy without hiring bodyguards”.

On his Days character: “I’m sure Eric has some skeletons in his closet that are sure to come out. There’s no such thing as a completely good guy on soaps!”

Does he get recognized? “Sometimes. I went to the mall the other day and nobody recognized me. Then I went to see a movie and the girl taking tickets was like, ‘Will you sign this ticket stub?'”. Gentlemanly Jensen did, of course.

Bachelod Pad: “I live with two friends from high school in a small house in LA. We just got a dog. It’s still a puppy – a German shepherd-rotweiller mix named Dallas.”

On his single status: “I don’t have a girlfriend. I did date a lot in high school – I had two serious girlfriends. Right now I’m just busy working.”

What he likes in a girl: “I like a girl I can joke around with and hang out with, someone on the same wavelength, someone who’s smart and can be herself around me.”

Up next: “I have three-year contract with Days so I’ll be there for a while. Eventually, I want to take some basic courses to keep my wits up. I’d also like to be able to do some film work.”

Lone Star

Texas Native Jensen Ackles is Flying High — But Solo — As DAYS OF OUR LIVE’s Eric Brady

JUST THE FACTS

Birthday: March 1, 1978.

Lip Service: “I’ve never been asked about them before. They’re all mine.”

Missing You: “I love Dallas; I miss it tremendously. L.A. is so big; it’s so crowded.”

Am I Dreaming? “I pinch myself every day. I have a great job. (laughs) I’ve never had any real depressions. Life is good.”

Naughty or Nice? “At this point, Eric is nice. But I’m told that can change.”

Movie Maven: “Eventually, I want to do films.”

My Mom Deidre Hall (Marlena): “It’s cool to work with people who are icons.”

Politically Correct: “I’m the most politically illiterate person you will ever find. I read the newspaper for the sports section.”

He says “cool” and he says “awesome”. A lot. You would swear that 19-year-old Jensen Ackles, the soap newcomer, who plays Eric Brady on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, is something of a Valley dude— he certainly looks the part. But Ackles maintains he’s pure Texan. “Amen to that!” he laughs. “I’m holding on to Texas as long as I can. I have too many Texas roots. I have two roommates from Texas; they’re both high school buddies. We have Texas flags all over the place. We have a nasty, nasty case of Texas pride.”

The best days of his life

Soap Opera News talks to Jensen Ackles – who plays Sami’s long-lost twin – after his first experience as a member of the Brady Bunch

The first thing you notice about Jensen Ackles – aside from his boyish good looks – is that while he’s from deep in the heart of Texas, he barely has a Southern accent. “Many people in Dallas don’t have a thick accent,” he says.” Plus my dad never had one, because he’s a performer.” But, Ackles admits, the South can shine through. “Sometimes I’ll say ‘y’all’.”

But don’t expect any y’alls from Ackles’ mouth while he`s playing Eric Brady on Days of Our Lives. The young actor, previously seen on the short-lived NBC sitcom Mr. Rhodes, has been thrust into one of the hottest storylines on daytime, and he’s not about to blow it.

“I try not to think about it that way”, Ackles says of the pressures of entering such a high-velocity plot. It`s a job, and for the most part, I`m having fun. I just look at is as a way to meet new people, work on a new set and made new relationships.”
