As director on Supernatural

Text by JensenDaily

Although Jensen be used to be in front of the cameras for Supernatural, he always had a special interest in the work done behind them, probably resulting from his previous experience.

The Supernatural director Kim Manners was the first to talk about it. During the season 1 filming, the veteran director said that Jensen would have a future as Supernatural director but Jensen never really believed that it could be possible.

In April 2009, for the 9th Official Supernatural Magazine, Jensen said:

“With this conscious attention to the technical side of things, does Ackles ever consider stepping behind the camera as a director? “Yes,” he replies thoughtfully, “I would say that the filmmaking aspect of it is definitely something that I’m interested in. I have ideas about how characters should interact, but as an actor I can’t tell another actor how he should perform. As a director, you can. I think that power’s kinda cool. Also, when I read scripts now, I don’t see the story in live form, I see it through a lens. Seeing it through a lens helps me as an actor because I can bring my performance in; I know that I’m on a 100mm lens, or I can make my performance a little bigger because I’m on a 27mm lens. Just knowing that kind of stuff is interesting to me, and that interest could easily translate into a directorial type of position, but I think it also helps me as an actor.”

Five years later, in 2010, the Manners’ belief came true, Jensen had his first opportunity to direct one of Supernatural episodes, the episode that would be the 4th episode of season 6.

At Rising Con 2010, in Barcelona, when talked about his future experience as a director (in that time the episode would be the 3rd and it will be filmed first) asked to the fans:

“Be gentle, be kind!”

On July 2010, the actress Samantha Ferris, via twitter, said that her friend who shot the episode was always saying:

“Jensen was a great director…”

Later, in September, for a small interview, Mark Sheppard said:

“The truth of the matter is he’s a natural,” Mark Sheppard (Crowley) tells Fancast. “He was extraordinarily well-prepared, and he’s very good at getting what he wants. It was fun for me and Jim [Beaver] to…”

One year later, it’s given to Jensen one more opportunity as Supernatural director. Again, the episode was the first filmed but it will air in 3rd place.

On July 2011, Jewel Staite, an episode guest star, said in her twitter:

“Jensen Ackles simply rocks as a director. And I’m not just saying that cuz he’s hot.”

On 30th edition of Official Supernatural Magazine, Colin Ford, guest star of that episode, said:

“Jensen is a fabulous director! He was so professional and detailed. He had a clear direction of how each scene was to be performed.”

With Supernatural’s season 8 confirmed, Jensen had a new opportunity to direct an episode. Again in 2012, the episode is the first to be filmed and the 3rd of the season.

Before filming start, Jerry Wanek, producer, director and production designer of Supernatural said on his twitter:

“Amazing how much Jensen has grown as a director. Off too a great start!!! Everyone is ecstatic about the new season!!”
